Youth Couch Derby

Yesterday, my wife and I went to watch the seventh annual youth couch derby that was taking place in the large parking lot of Franconia Mennonite Church in Montgomery County, PA. It was being sponsored by Franconia Conference and Eastern District Mennonites. For this derby, the youth turn couches into hand pushable vehicles and race to see who can get through the curvy course the quickest while accomplishing several different tasks. Below are some photos from this race.

At the starting line

Coming round the curve

Energetic youth

Approaching youth leader water dousing station

A more traditional couch on wheels

The back row and the person at the wheel have all the hard work

Some youth show a lot of spirit with painted faces

Others show spirit by enthusiastically preparing to douse their youth pastor

The youth in this last photo were from my home church Perkiomenville Mennonite.
You can see many more photos of this team at the church's web site.

A Cornutopia of Delights and Memories

This post highlights a number of delights and memories from the past couple weeks and before - a walk in the present and down memory lane. The first delights are signs of Spring, a bit of Irish Step Dancing, and a couple scenes from a flower show followed by some scenes reflecting on my dad and his life.

 Some beautiful Johnny-Jump-Ups growing in our flowerbed

These were growing wild in a nearby park woodland.

These were in the same park along a creek where the sun shines warmly.

This past Sunday evening our church's youth group held a soup and silent auction fundraiser to go to a Youth Convention later this summer. In this particular picture, people donated enough money to see them dance. It was quite fun!

This is a scene from the Peter Becker Retirement Home Flower Show.
It is a combination of real & artificial flowers and art work.

 Much of this done by the residents of the retirement home
with sponsorship from local businesses.

Here we are singing a favorite hymn of Dad's called When There's Love at Home.
The first verse reads as follows:

There is beauty all around,
When there’s love at home;
There is joy in ev’ry sound,
When there’s love at home.
Peace and plenty here abide,
Smiling sweet on ev’ry side;
Time doth softly, sweetly glide,
When there’s love at home;
Love at home, love at home,
Time doth softly, sweetly glide,
When there’s love at home.

Here's Dad's eighth grade diploma. He only had eight years of schooling
but he kept up with us children who received much more schooling.

Here's part of a display that was set up to commemorate Dad's life.
Click on this photo to see it much enlarged.

This the planned burial site for Dad and Mom. Dad's body was cremated;
but the plan is that when Mom dies, she will be given a traditional burial
and Dad's urn will go in her casket.  The building behind the tombstone
was an old German schoolhouse in the 1800s.

Lemons to Lemonade - Trent Wagler & The Steel Wheels

This past Sunday, my wife and I went to the Concert Sundaes in the Park in Souderton. Each summer, a series of concerts are held every Sunday evening. That evening it was a bluegrass and country folk group called Trent Wagler & The Steel Wheels. Some of the instruments they played included guitar, banjo, string bass, and mandolin. The group that evening consisted
of only three people. The fiddler was not there which was a major disappointment for many. They also did not play many old time favorites. But on with the photos and then some more comments pointing out some of the highlights.

This was the three member band. The songs they sang they played well. They knew how to be expressive both vocally and in body language.

Here's the band close up. They also told some stories - one about how one of their grandfathers had been a part of an underground Amish party band in Indiana.

Here's part of the audience. It's a bring your own chair and blanket event. And it's a great place to meet and talk to friends and acquaintances from the area. My wife and I met quite a number of people that way. :)

This was the ice cream sundae, hotdog, and pizza lines during intermission. Fortunately, we bought our delicious ice cream sundaes before then. I had a black raspberry sundae and my wife had moose track and chocolate ice cream. All in all, it was a relaxing evening out.
